Valencia, Historical city - A City of Museums

There are a wide variety of museums to visit in Valencia. Here, we outline some of the possible ways we can enrich our enjoyment and cultural appreciation of the city

1.- City Museum

Opening hours: Tuesday to Saturday, from 10:00 to 14:00 and from 16:30 to 20:30. Sundays and public holidays, from 10:00 to 15:00. Mondays closed.
Entrance free.
Situated in the ancient Palace of the Counts of Berdebel, it is an example of Valencian seigniorial architecture. The museum has paintings from the 15th century on, mainly by Valencian artists

2.- IVAM (Valencian Institute of Modern Art )

Opening hours: Tuesday to Sunday, from 10:00 to 20:00. Mondays closed. Ticket price: 2€. Sundays, entrance free. Special prices for groups
The objective of IVAM is to research and promote 20th century art. Its program of activities offers permanent collections such as Julio Gonzalez’s, temporary exhibitions, courses, workshops and the publication of the most avant-garde artists’ work.

3.- La Beneficiencia (Cultural centre).

Opening hours: Tuesday to Saturday, from 10:00 to 14:30 and from 16:00 to 19:00.Sundays and holidays, from 10:00 to 20:00. Mondays closed.
Entrance free.
The cultural centre is made up of the Prehistory Museum, the Ethnology Museum and the Parpalló gallery (open from 16:00 to 20:00) and the Instituto Valenciano de Estudios e Investigación (Valencian Institute of Research and Investigation).

4.- MUVIM (Valencian museum of illustration and modernity).

The MUVIM, designed by the Sevillian architect Guillermo Vazquez, is devoted to a decisive period in the history of Valencian society from the 18th century on. It has permanent exhibition such as “The adventure of thought”, temporary exhibitions, audio-visual projections, a library, study hall and didactic workshops.

5. Museo de Cerámica y Artes Santuarias "González Martí"

Horario: martes a sábado, 10h a 14h. y de 16h. a 20h. Domingos y Festivos; de 10h a 14h.

El Museo Nacional de Cerámica y Artes Suntuarias “González Martí”, es un museo de titularidad estatal y de gestión directa del Ministerio de Educación, Cultur y Deporte. En 1954 en museo se instaló en el Palacio del Marqués de Dos Aguas. El 1 de marzo de 1962 se declararon Mnumento Histórico Artístico las colecciones y el edificio del Museo.
El museo posee un extensa colección de cerámica española a partir de la época medieval, especialmente valenciana, y diversas artes suntuarias como joyería, abánicos, textiles, muebeles, así como cuatro carrozas. El museo tiene por finalidad la coservación, investigación y difusión de las cerámicas, artes suntuarias y decorativas que constituyen sus fondos museísticos así como el propio inmueble en el que se instala.

6.- Patriach Museum

El museo contiene una valiosa colección de pinturas de arte religioso, entre las que hay que resaltar algunas pertenecientes al Greco, Ribalta, Juan de Juanes,... así como cuadros de pintura flamenca, pertenecientes, en su mayor parte a los siglos XVI y XVII.

8.- Fine Arts Museum San Pio V

Entrance free.
It houses the most important cultural references of the Valencian Community with regard to historical painting, forming a great art gallery that covers from the 14th century to the start of the 16th century. The 17th and 18th centuries are represented by the Valencian baroque school, Ribalta and Espinosa, and world-renowned artists such as El Greco, Morales, Velásquez, Murillo, Goya,... The 19th and 20th centuries are reflected in the work of Benlliure, Pinazo and most significantly, Joaquin Sorolla. The museum also has a very interesting section of contemporary art, a sculptures pavilion and an archaeological collection.
